What about something everybody knows about, like how mad the world is going about this swine flu, you could talk about the statistics of how many people have caught it and how they reacted to the treatment. Failing that you could stick to somethng basic like animal right, abortion and smoking in public places :)

If it’s something general, for example for a class you’re taking, maybe you could talk about some things that happened on 11th May.

Here’s a partial list (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_11 , which goes all the way back to Byzantium)

1997: Deep Blue beats Kasparov On 11 May 1997, IBM’s supercomputer Deep Blue makes chess history by defeating Gary Kasparov, the chess champion widely regarded as the greatest ever chess player. The Russian master conceded defeat after 19 moves in the sixth game of the tournament, losing the match 2.5 to 3.5. It was the first defeat of a reigning world champion by a machine in tournament play. Big Blue, which can analyze 200 million chess moves a second, had met Kasparov once before, but the human held his own against the machine. Before their second meeting, Kasparov had never lost a professional chess match.

1998 India carries out its first nuclear tests since 1974. 1987 Klaus Barbie, the “Butcher of Lyon”, goes on trial in Lyon, France for war crimes committed during the Second World War. He is eventually found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. 1985 In England, 56 football fans are killed as a fire engulfs Bradford City’s stadium. 1963 In Moscow, Greville Wynne, a British businessman is sentenced to eight years in jail for spying. 1960 Mossad agents capture Nazi Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 1956 Britain grants independence to The Gold Coast, which is renamed Ghana. 1949 Israel joins the United Nations. 1949 Siam changes its name to Thailand. 1943 The Second World War: Amphibious U.S. assault troops land on Attu in the Aleutian Islands in an attempt to seize control of the Island from the Japanese. 1891 The future Tsar Nicholas II of Russia survives a failed assassination attempt in Japan. 1867 The Second Treaty of London is signed reaffirming Luxemburg’s independence. 1812 British Prime Minister Spencer Percival is assassinated in the lobby of the House of Commons by bankrupt broker John Bellingham.
