Social Security

If someone is collecting Social Security Disability (SSD) and that is their only income, are they eligible to also qualify for Social Security Income (SSI)? Is it possible to collect both at the same time?

Answer #1

Someone I know is already collecting SSDI and was told she would qualify for SSI too because she is not working. Doesn’t want to work either. She has no bank account or other money in retirement funds either . Nothing… She was a waitress for many years and has an Anxiety Disorder. She CAN work she just won’t. it’s not right. She won’t get the full amount allowed tho.

Answer #2

No… Each payment is specific to an individual. Each payment accounts for the average living expenses of each kind of person. If you are disabled, your payment (SSD) will be designed to meet your needs as a disabled person. The other payment is simply for those who are unemployed. If you were to get that too, you would be receiving enough money to meet the needs of yourself as well as the needs of the average unemployed person. Seeing as that wouldn’t be fair, you cannot apply for both payments.

The terminology may be different depending on the country, but judging by your wording here, the answer is a definite no.
