Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular lines

Are the slopes of Parallel lines the same? Are the slopes of perpendicular lines inverse to each other? Thanks for the help.

Answer #1

ollopa is 100% correct

Answer #2

Draw a few sets of parallel lines and look at them. Slope is the rise over the run: change in why over the change in X. The slopes of parallel lines have to be the same. Another way of looking at it is to write the equations of some parallel lines in slope-intercept form. You will notice that the slopes are the same but the y-intercepts are different.

Perpendicular lines have to have an angle of 90 degrees between them. This is important as it implies a relationship between the slopes of all sets perpendicular lines. The relationship is hard to explain without a picture, so have a look at this site: http://www.tpub.com/math2/4.htm

The slopes are the negtive inverse of each other.
