What is this object's velocity?
Starting at x = - 16 m at time t = 0 s, an object takes 16 s to travel 55 m in the +x direction at a constant velocity. On a sheet of paper make a position vs. time graph of the object’s motion. What is its velocity?
(I did the graph and took the slope of the line to find velocity, but the answer i got is 4.4 and that’s wrong. so what do i do?)
any help would be appreciated ^^
to get the velocity you want to divide the distance by the time (i.e, 55m/16 seconds)which by my quick calculation is 3.44 metres per second
the answer above is right with a slight difference velocity=displacement/time not distance/time..it matters a lot in some cases of directional field..
i am not able to teach you the graph method here..but here in this case the velocity would probably be=55+16/16=4.4375…
Velocity is usually used as synonymous with speed, but in physics direction of motion is also considered. That is why x is introduced into the problem. Unfortunately my physics teacher told us this but then went no deeper into it. I can’t help but I suspect andy7860 is right.
I think the answer is 3.44 m/s +X. True velocity requires both a scalar (quantity) and vector (direction). The scalar is 3.44m/s and the vector is +x. If anything important depends on this, please get it checked.
that’s exactly what i did, and i got 4.4 (because our teacher has specified we use only 2 significant figures for this answer) but that is not the correct answer. I can’t see what I’m doing wrong. to me it looks correct but when i enter the answer in the answer field it says incorrect (our assignment is online)
the distance isn’t really 55m. because the object starts at x=-16m and ends at 55m so the distance is 71.
k, my last guess would be 2.437 m/s ..just check out if this is the answer..
actually the answer is 3.4…..which i don’t understand why….
but there was a total of 55m travelling….
i got it..it has been only asked to calculate velocity in positive direction so -16 should not be taken..
understood. thx
actuallly that makes things alot clearer! thanks!
