What can I take to make my shoulder stop hurting so much?

I messed up my shoulder pretty bad. I went to the orthopedic today and he said it is unstable (keeps dislocating alittle then popping back in) and that i probabily have a labrum tear (i have to have a mri arthogram). He told me that im in so much pain because over the counter (no prescription) pain killers/anti-inflamatories are “like peeing in the ocean” (<wont change it at all) unless i take like 4 pills every 4-6 hours for 4 days before feeling effect. He does not suggest this. He prescribed me Celebrex but when i went to pick it up from the pharmacy i found out it has sulfur in it and im alergic to it- meaning i cant take it :(. im only 5 foot 3, and about 100 lbs so i cant really take crazy high doses and my mom refuses to let me take any form of asprin. My shoulder is killing me! any suggestions… PLEASE :,(

Call your doctor back and explain your allergic to an ingredient in the medicine and ask for something else.

Answer #2

they only write prescriptions until 4, and my mom is at work until 6… they are 1/2 hour a way and only do written prescriptions (not sent over the computer or the phone) :,(

Answer #3

Even though they dont do them over the phone I would call the doctor and tell them what happened and see if they will have a nurse walk it to the in hospital pharmacy so your mom can pick it up after work

Answer #4

they are not in a hospital… and my mom called back and he said he wont prescribe anything else.

Answer #5

Personally I used anti-inflammatories when I had something similar and agree they are very slow to work. However, when my shoulder was still not better after weeks I went back to the doctor and they injected a small shot of steroids into my shoulder. This actually fixed it straight away and the needle was not painful at all (I don’t like needles but was perfectly fine with it). It is worth asking if this is a possible alternative for you if you can’t take any pills that will help.

There is not much over the counter that will help to be honest. Try ibuprofen to take the edge off and then use either heat pads, which you can get in drugstores (deep heat rub from there would work too), or an ice pack (sometimes some people prefer heat to ice, so use which you prefer, or try both and see if either is better for you. Ice would probably be best as it could take down swelling, but heat would relax the muscles, so make it less painful in general.

Tie your arm up in a sling (use a scarf as a makeshift one, if you do not own one) and do not use it at all if you can. Do not lie on it at night and just try not to move your arm and definitely do not lift it high. Then go back to the doctor in the morning and ask for something else to help you. If he refuses then see a different doctor, because he sounds like he is just being awkward.

i think he is being awkward about the medicine because today was the first time i have ever seen him. i have been icing it but all the muscles in my shoulder, upper arm, that side of my next, and in my back are very tight (he said it is my body’s way of trying to protect the injury). Heat is a good idea because it should loosen that up. Thanks :)

Answer #9

No problem :) if you can’t get any heat rub or pads then a hot water bottle or even bath should help. I hope you feel better soon and manage to get something sorted tomorrow so you can hel properly.

the heat felt really good on my back and neck! my mom is going to get another hot water bottle today :)
