Should I quit my study? Kinda long...

Ok so I am studying automotive engineering, just a pretrade course. It is a very fast intense course, that goes for a year. My goal is to become a motorcycle mechanic, and I NEED the pretrade for it.

There is a problem. Well more than one. The first is that I had been absent from there a number of times, putting me well behind. The thing is to do the tests, you have to finish all the bookwork and do the practicals for it. Obviously I can do bookwork at home but not the practicals. I was away for 2 weeks in a row because I was sick, and the next few days I went I could not concentrate as I was still sick so I didnt get much done. I missed out on basic engineering and micromeasuring tools completely. Obviously I was at home so I did the bookwork for em, but could not do the tests as I had not done the practicals. We have had 10 tests to date, and I have only passed 3, and have to resit 3 others and the other 4 I havnt even sat yet as I missed out on completing practicals. So catching up is HARD, if not impossible. There is a week at the very end of the year to do catchups, but seriously I have missed out well more than a week.

The other issue is fees. This is a zero fees program, which is basically meaning all I have to pay is direct materials costs. Which I have done and is not refundable. $565 I think it was. Fees are $5000ish give or take. Basically the govt pays for it. However, if you have less than 80% attendance OR have less than 80% achievement I have to pay the fees.

If I would quit, I would try to find a full time job, but in my circumstances is not easy due to previous driving charges incurring loss of license (which I am aware is my own doing) and this is basically saying I’ve been in court 3 times and have done community service and paid fines etc. I’ve backed off with stupid stuff like that since, but obviously im stuck with my record. If anybody want the same job as me, they are going to get it not me. I also do not have good referees from previous jobs due to turning up late etc. I had a couple of jobs that lasted less than a few months so it makes me look like im useless to employ.

Alsojust the other day I wasnt thinking and my own motortcycle needed servicing so I decided to do it myself… at 9pm at night when I was tired. I knew how to do it but I forgot to do the first bit before diving in now it runs noisy as. For those mechanically minded I went to adjust tappets without putting piston to TDC on compression stroke and just went straight to tappets. Stupid thing is my study is on the other side of town and I need the tools from there to take crank cover off OR spark plug off so I could find TDC to do it right. Its a 45-50 minute drive each way. I am suppossed to have 2 tests today and I cant because bike runing noisy as anything and dont want to have to risk replacing new engine.

My timetable is as follows, if it halps anyone that wants to help me… Monday and friday I get up at 6am, leave at 7am, study starts at 8am till 2:30pm, nearly an hour drive back home again. Wednesday + Thursday is get up at 8am, leave at 9am to get to study by 10am, leave study at 4:30pm, get home at 5:30. Tuesday is work experience day, get up at 7:30, leave at 8:30, start work at 9am, leave at 5:30 again home at 6ish.

If I do quit study I am no longer eligible for zero fees at all. I would go to a different place to study which is only 20min drive from home rather than 50 min. Cuts down on travel time and costs a lot. This place wont have zero fees though.

EDIT: So what do you think would be the best optin for me? And I was meant to put this under education+school or whatever it called, my bad!

Hi,

I think you nee to stay in your studies. Not only would you lose your zero fees, you could also be losing a great future job. it’s just a bump in the road that you were sick and got behind. Do any of the professors know that you are having a hard time? Maybe they can help you or get you a tutor.

I think it’s most important for you to continue the studies so you can have a better future.
