Should I pray for my atheist uncle?

Does Our Lady still perform miracles? Yah! I would say so! I have an uncle who does not believe in The Lord. Now, we are not aloud to call him an atheist because he always says that you can not believe in something that does not exist and therefor you can not not believe in God. In other words, he believes that there is no God to not to believe in. I think he has a point somehow. He is a cool uncle and I really get on with him well. He is not one of those dangerous atheist you hear so much about lately. If there is such a thing, I think he is a good atheist. He always says that you should do good in order to be good and not for the reward of eternal life or whatever. He would never mock me for my believes. I just wished that he had Our Lord Jesus in his heart so at least he could go to heaven. He is also very curious about things and sometimes he wants to know to much about things that are created by Satan. I pray to Our Lady that she would close his eyes for worldly matters and open his eyes to the eternal truth of our Saviour. And I really know that The Virgin answered my prayers because my uncle decided to visit Lourdes in France in Europe. That is the place where Our Lady performs miracles on christian believers and She heals limbs and other body parts. He wanted to see what that place was all about. Early May he traveled to Lourdes but he came back within a week because on the day that he arrived there, he slipped and broke his leg. I really feel for him, but should I pray for him? I truly believe that it was a miracle by Our Blessed Virgin. Who can give me advice?

I thought that my uncle braking his leg in Lourdes was a sort of a miracle performed by Our Lady for a divine reason and that it would not be right to ask Her to fix his leg again. That could never be right. His leg should fix now by itself and with the help of just a doctor and modern medicine. I do not think that there are many miracles performed nowadays so this was a good one, wasn’t it. Who cares that it was sort of a reversed miracle as my uncle called it.

As for me calling some atheists dangerous. I suppose I have called them dangerous because they have often say things about God not being real that make sense. And yes, that can be scary sometimes. I am not talking about atheists that call me names like creep and so on. I ignore them because they act the same as some christians I know. I think they behave like that anyway, christian or atheist.

And I agree with Emblessed that prayer is a great gift to someone. I do not think that Our Lord would always listen because He never does what you ask for. Not more than the Saints or the Virgin anyway. But it is nice for one human to know that an other prays for him. You know that the other cares for you. I think that was what Emblessed meant. I am not sure if my uncle would be happy with me praying for him being an atheist and all that. Even if I would fake it not to upset Our Lady. I just want him to know that I care for him and that I feel sorry for his broken leg.

First…it doesnt matter what crazy stories u’ve heard. Forget them and worry about urself and your life. Second…u should never impose your own religious beliefs on anyone else. WE all have our own idea of god and if this even exsists. My belief system isnt like urs and I know I’m not going to hell just because I dont believe in what you believe in. Whether a person is athiest or muslim/christian/hindu/buddist etc…its just fine and by accepting people for who they are and what they believe in is bigger than if religious beliefs are just that or true at all. Dont judge your uncle. Being judgemental clouds your senses and thats not a good thing. Just be accepting and love and pray for whoever comes in your life. Theres nothing worse than wishing or hoping or telling someone that their life is being judged by what you believe in. AT the end of the day, we are all just people of different races/ethnic backgrounds/religious ideas/beliefs but that doesnt make up our genetic world. your character and personality and how you treat others is what any person sees first. We all make mistakes and do sinful things and immoral things at times but is this a reflection of our religious beliefs?? or is it a reflection of who we are? I’m not fanatical and I respect all religions and never judge someone because they may go to church or temple or synagogue etc…People are who they are regardless of religion. No matter what you believe in, you should always hope for goodness and pray for good health and happiness for someone else. This is your family and you shouldnt even be questioning it. Funmail me if u’d like to talk more.

If you want to pray for him, that’s your business. I think it would be a good idea if you sat down and got to know him better. I’m not saying you have to let him try to convert you - I’m saying that you seem to have a lot of misconceptions about us atheists and it might bring you guys closer together if you understood him more.

Well, his leg wasn’t really badly broken and he had to sort of laugh about himself. He said that it was the best proof of God’s existents so far. A miraculous healing in revers, suiting for a non-believer. I agree with him. Luckily enough for atheists that there are not that many places like Lourdes in the world. One could even say that the world would be a safer place without places like Lourdes… for atheists that is.

* He is not one of those dangerous atheist you hear so much about lately.

You don’t suppose that’s because people are just spreading nasty rumours about atheists, and in reality we’re no more likely to be dangerous than anyone else?

The prison population is roughly 1% atheists, but the general population is closer to 10% atheist. That means a god believer is 10 times more likely to be dangerous than an atheists.

Answer #8

So let me see if I have this straight. He went to Loudres, where Mary is said to heal broken limbs. While there, he broke a limb, forcing him to return early from his trip. Am I missing something here? Wouldn’t having his limb miraculously healed be a pretty good way to change his mind? Don’t you wonder why he has his doubts?

If you feel compelled to pray for your uncle according to your own beliefs, by all means do so. But if he refuses to change his mind, you should respect his wishes and not force the issue of religion with him.
