shitzu puppy may be sick, what do I do?

we bought two shitzu puppies two weeks ago. our male puppy has seemed to be constipated since we brought them home. today he seems very sick. his stomach is making loud gurgling sounds . we havent changed the food his other owner was feeding them and the female is not having any problems. what should we do. I cant stand to think of him suffering.

it does sound like an intestinal problem. Has the puppy been wormed? notice any toys missing? have his bowels been normal during any time that you’ve had him? also has he been eating reguralry?

He really should go to the vet. I got my shih tzu from a breeder 8 years ago and I still remember a story she told me. SHe had sold a puppy to a family with 2 little girls. somehow the pup had eaten a barbie dress and the pet parents had no idea. the dog gradually got sicker and sicker, stopped eating, became lethargic, wouldn’t eliminate, and finally they noticed his belly bloating. Eventually, they took him to a vet, where the x-ray showed the culprit- an intestinal blockage. The dog later died before surgery could be preformed.

I am especially concerned because it is a toy breed. WHat usually doesn’t effect a larger dog can really wreak havoc on a toy.

Altough, my shih tzu eats dryer sheets and passes them with no problem, probably becuase he larger.

Hope everything goes well with the pup!

Answer #2

Take him to a vet, he might have gotten hold of something that is blocking his intestine. That can kill him, so get him to a vet.

Answer #3

Don’t even TRY the mineral oil for GAWD’S sake!! That might very well kill him…after two weeks, I hope he makes it, as it is…your new motto…”First do no harm!” and get tha baby to the VET.

GET TO THE VET! He could have a bowel obstruction that will lead to death if untreated. GO NOW!!!

just a quick note to say thanks to all. I did take my pup to the vet yesterday for emergancy visit. He is just fine. had some stomach trouble is all. we do not let the puppies out of our site. if we are not in the room with them then they go in there crate. We take no chances with these babies. they are priceless to us. just wasnt sure if a vet could be seen on a weekend but if you pay the extra they can be so since I wasnt sure wanted to just know if there was something I could do till monday if I couldnt get him in. They are just wonderful babies and thanks to all who answered.

Answer #7

Try mineral oil, and keep him on fluids (no food at all) for 12 hours. Give him gatorade and chicken broth.

If that still doesn’t work, definitely get him to the vet
