How does renewing your license work?

My license expires for the first time on February 14. I plan to renew it soon, but it says it can take up to 6-8 weeks before receiving my new one. If I don’t get my new one by the time the other expires, what do I do? Or will the DMV give me a printout that I can carry around until I get my new license? I’ll be 21 on the 14th, and I’m supposed to go to Vegas.

U just go to the dmv and they issue another license, with updated info and a new pic, oh joy :-)

I haven’t had my license for several years due to my epilepsy, but I recall that when it was time to renew, you received a slip of paper stating that your old license has expired but the new one is on its way. That piece of paper was to be kept with your license until your new one came in and was as good as having a valid license. I’m not sure if that method has changed, or even what method is used in California, but rest assured, when you renew your license, you will legally be permitted to drive, one way or another, while you wait for your new license.

I wish I could do a new picture! My old one is horrible! They don’t do that after only 3 years though :(
