Can you use a regular electronics soldering iron to melt silver solder?

If not are there certain kinds of soldering irons that can? Do I have to use a blow torch for silver solder?

I will be using this with borax for my flux but what sort of acid should I use to get rid of the remaining residue after soldering?

Answer #1

Silver solder has a much higher melting point than lead or lead free solders. Technically it would be more accurate to say brazing then soldering when using silver alloys. I don’t believe any soldering iron or gun gets hot enough to melt solver solder. Generally some sort of torch is required. Propane/air torches don’t work well because they don’t get much hotter than the melting point of silver solder. Propane/oxygen get much hotter and work better. If you are doing small work like soldering jewelry than a microflame butane torch is your best bet. Your pickling solution may depend on what you are soldering. I’ve heard of people boiling jewelry they soldered in vinegar to remove scale though usually stronger acids are used.
