What was going on with my radio?

Really though mine does that and I think it has something to do with the anttena

Check the antenna or it could just be a bad signal

Get a new one. It sounds scary. :O

My car stereo used to do that, but opposite. It would turn wayyy up! So I took it apart and some wires were bare and touching. so it could be something simple like that. Just make sure that if you take yours apart, you unplug it! lol

If it is an f.m. (frequency modulated radio, there are two temporary effects that can cause this to happen.

(a) the received signal drops in strength or the random background noise increases in strength and a circuit called the “squelch” circuit automatically reduces the audio level either to zero or a very low level. [ Squelch - further information - http://funadvice.com/r/14t3gordguc ]

(b) your receiver picks up a stronger (unwanted) interferring signal either on an “adjacent channel” or one that simply “breaks though” from any frequency because it is such a high signal strength, then the stronger signal creates a so called “capture effect” which causes the receiver to reject the wanted signal and respond only to the stronger signal. If that stronger signal is “modulated” with information (e.g. speech) then you hear that information instead of the wanted signal. But if the stronger signal is unmodulated (i.e. has no information carried on it) the radio receiver will still be captured but just produce a quiet or “mute” output.
