Will brushing and flossing prevent cavities from getting worse?

Ok say you have a cavity or 2… well by brushing your teeth/flossing/taking care of your teeth, will that keep them from getting worse? I know that it won’t make them go away, but will it help stop things from getting worse by taking care of them? Same if you have a small “hole’ starting in the side of one? Taking care of them will help stop it from getting bigger/worse right?

Answer #1

It depends on how bad it is. It can be done though with regular flossing, mouth wash, and brushing you can restrengthen your teeth.

Answer #2

I know that a soft tooth can remineralize, but if you actually have a hole in the tooth, it’s going to be difficult to keep it from getting worse. not that it can’t be done.

There are a few things. You didn’t mention that you rinse, floss, or scrape your tongue. You need to do those three things for proper oral hygiene. Brushing only removes the plaque from the surface of your teeth. It doesn’t remove plaque from between your teeth, which flossing does. Scraping the tongue removes the bacteria from your tongue that can catch onto your teeth (it’s also the leading cause of bad breath). Rinsing will get rid of the rest of the bacteria that clings to the cheeks and throat.

You don’t need to avoid any foods except highly acidic foods, primarily limes and lemons. Also, check to see if you grind your teeth during the day, or more importantly, at night while you sleep. Grinding can cause microfractures that turn tiny divits in the teeth into cracks that lead to cavities.

And finally, don’t chew gum. The sweetners in gum can also cause microfractures.

Some people are genetically predisposed to having cavities while others are not. You may still have cavities even with all of these preventive measures
