Question on eating with my retainer

Well I got my retainer yesterday, and I’ve found it SO hard to eat with it in (I’m not allowed to take it out unless I’m brushing my teeth and cleaning it)

I tried eating soft food like mashed potato to see if it was easier than like chicken or something, but it was equally as awkward.

I was just wondering…for the mean time, is there anything I could drink that will keep me going since I’m eating so little, just till I can gradually get myself onto eating proper food.

I always took mine out and then put it back in afterward. I know they worry that your teeth will move when you eat but food gets stuck in it and it’s just down right annoying.

( I would take it out when I ate and then put it right back in afterward)

Hi that’s weird that you have to eat with your retainer cause once your done eating you have to remove it to wash it no?maybe you should call the ortho and ask them.

Answer #3

ahh, well I’ll call my dentist cause he told me to keep it in.

Thanks :)

Answer #4

You can take it out to eat, you are supposed to. You have to eat, it’s not healthy. I always ate with my retainer, it was hard at first but after a couple days it got easier. You have to get used to it before you eat with it.. if that makes since? BUt yeah, you are supposed to take it out to eat. If you leave it in the food will get all stuck in there and cause teeth and gum problems.

Answer #5

I have a retainer and its not going to kill you if you take it out when your eating!!!

Answer #6

uh…youre not suppose to eat it with it in…I have a retainer and I take it out when I eat and put it back in later (well use too, I quit wearin it lol) but take it out and put it back in when you eat…it wont hurt anythin, its safe, its safer to take itout than eatin with it in…you could break it or damage by doin that..so stop and take it out and put it back in when you finish eatin

Answer #7

I just got one too and it is a challange I agree im not spose to take it out either but I do sometimes. I suggest start with very soft food then work up after your can eat with the soft food go to harder foods and keep doing that untill you can eat

Answer #10

My ortho wired my retainers in because I was not wearing them, so now I have no choice but to eat with them in…it was hard or the first few days but it has gotten easier

Answer #11

I Just got my retainer today, the ortho said that I had to keep it in at all times. Even when eating, I’ve had my lunch and really struggles but it will become easier after 2 days. Some people are allowed to take their retainers out when they eat theres no wrong and right answer! It depends on your teeth, not anyone elses!

Answer #12

I just got my retainer today, and the ortho said to keep it in at all times. Even when eating. So if your ortho has told you to wear it you probably should even though its horrible you should get used to it after 2 days. And some people can remove there retainer whilst eating it depends on your teeth nobody elses!
