Okay, this might sound horrible and mean, but I must ask. I have a pet rat and she's pretty old now, plus she has a golf ball sized tumer on her tummy, but we never went 2 get it fixed unfortunitly. So thats da first part of the story. My mom has a serious breast cancer and she'll be starting treatment soon, and the doctors say the rat could make her sick while she's being treated so we need 2 put the rat down. The thing is we have no money 2 go 2 the vet for putting her down humanly, so is there a human way at home 2 put her down, that wont cause her no or little pain. I dont want 2 seem like a monster but it must be done for the sake of my mom, and also, for the sake of the rat because her tumer is causeing her pain. Any ideas?
OMG - I am amazed at some of the horrible and inhumane suggestions given here. Rat poison is a horrible way to die. It is EXTREMELY slow and painful. Rat poison causes internal bleeding. The bleeding into the joints and muscles cause extreme pain. The rat may take weeks to die and will die of circulatory shock or severe anemia. Digging a hole and leaving your rat with some food and letting it starve to death. Crushing it's head with a rock. Just take it to your local animal shelter and give it to them. They will give it an injection and it will die quickly. It also costs nothing to go to the animal shelter or animal services. I am sorry about your mom. And sorry that you were not able to provide the proper medical care that your pet deserved when it developed the tumor.

Slicing off it's head is painless and quick, but past the mental determination most humans have.
Feeding it rat poison costs money, but is less 'gory' and is also painless to rats.
Otherwise you'll have to crush it...restrain it on a rock and then drop another rock onto it's head with considerable force. As soon as it drops on to your rat stomp up and down on the rock really hard.
I know it is hard to do things like that but a mom is irraplacable. a rat is. remember that you family and yourself is more important than a rat. I know I may sound mean but if it is causing your mum pain and worry and stuff then it should be either given to someone else or put down.
no, the doctor told us to get rid of it because its easy for rat 2 catch and carry a disease, and with cancer if you catch something as simple as a cold, your screwed. if the rat is carrying any type of disease it can get her sick. but thats not what I asked, I asked about the rat.
well I'm not crushing it or cutting its head off, thats horrible!!! and nobody will buy this rat, I dont think you understand how massive the tumer is. lol. but I don't know... my dad wants too buy rat poisen, its not expensive but I heard it causes the rat a whole lot of pain.
so her tumer got huge, we just moved her to the garage which I was happy with. lol. but she was obviously in pain. my dad put her down, but he wont tell me how he did it :[ I hope he didnt hurt her.!
Call the humane society and see what they would charge for a rat...The amount of the drug they use is based on weight, so a rat couldn't possibly take that much...It might be very cheap...

I myself would want to be put down if I were in major pain and there was no treatment. the humane thing to do is kill it quicklly.
just sell the rat so it wont have to be put down ? so it can keep its life and maybe the new owners will get the tumer sorted
by the way.. there is no way the rat would make her sick, she lied to you and probably just hate it and wants it gone!
Id sell the rat but maybe sell it to a friend so you could always go and see it
rat poison is not painful. It's just slow.
