Will mom ween puppies on her own?

What can I do with 5 puppies about 3 weeks old that the mother has stopped feeding them? What can I feed them/

Answer #1

Not cows milk.

Go to Petsmart/Petco/Pet Supermarket (or any pet supply store). Buy KMR brand puppy formula powder, with a bottle set. Mix the powder with 2 parts water, and microwave it just until it’s warm. Bottlefeed those babies every 4 hours. After they drink, dampen a washcloth with water and gently rub their genital area so they pee and poop (it mimicks the mothers tongue stimulating them to go to the bathroom, otherwise they just don’t go and can be fatal). Finally, I’d spay your Momma dog so this doesn’t happen again.

Good luck.

If you are sure they are at least 3 weeks old you can begin to give them a “gruel” . Grind up dog food into a powder, we use our regular blender to gring the kibble. Mix the ground kibble with warm water until it looks like thin oatmeal. Offer this mix to the pups 3 times a day. The pups need to be at least 3 weeks old because that is when their “lap” reflex is present. They should have teeth starting to come in if they are at least 3 weeks. Sometimes the teeth coming in is the reason the mom stops nursing at this age. Teeth hurt the mama dog!!

I ween my pups between 3-4 weeks, I usally get a wet puppy food (science diet) and pour some Esbalic over it, this is a milk replacer for puppies, Sometimes I heat it up for them, just a little bit, not to hot, they should have teeth. If not you could do the same thing and ask your vet for a curved tip syrings and force feed them until they eat on there own, My main concern would be for the mother, why did she stop. I would check her teat’s and make sure they are not red or swollen if they are or she has a fever take her to the vet Asap. she may have mastitis. You can buy a digital therm. and buy some lube and take her temp in the anus till them. beeps, it should be between 100.5 and 102.5 if it higher go to vet. I hope all this helps, good luck
