Potty training my son

HOW DO I POTTY TRAIN MY 17MONTH OLD SON…

Answer #1

Hey, usually children are not ready to start training until around 24 months but some good guidelines to go by to see if he is ready are:

  1. Is he showing interest in going to the toilet? Does he follow you and want to see what you are doing? Does he ask to sit on the toilet?

  2. Does he tell you that his nappy is soiled or wet? Does he tell you he is doing something in his nappy?

  3. does he seem to have regular times that he needs changing?

If you answered yes to any 2 of the above, then it might be time to start introducing him to the potty/ toilet. Encourage him with praise when he gets it right (“What a grown up boy you are using the toilet” etc) but still encourage when he doesn’t (“that’s OK, you can try again next time” etc).

My only warning is not to force the issue. Some children show an interest and then revert back, especially if there are major changes going on in their lives such as a new sibling, a death in the family, or even starting/ changing preschool. Some children will do this a few times before being fully trained. The secret is to be patient and encourage him. Stressing about it can actually make the whole process take longer.

All children are different. He will do it in his own time.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Make sure he is ready first. Can he go through his nap without wetting himself? If he stays dry during the night or if he cant stand to have a wet or dirty diaper on then he is probally ready. I would rush him if he is not doing any of those things but if he is then I agree with torikeene. Good Luck and God Bless!

Two of my boys were a little over age 3 when totally finished. Boys do take longer than girls, our first born was a girl. Our 4th child also a boy, was very very easy, and showed interest at a little over 2 years old, and was finished by 2 1/2. Praise the Lord, he knew I deserved that, he was easier than our girl was :)

With boys it’s generally harder than with girls. Does he show an interest in using the potty? If not, take him in with you a few times and say soething like “ look I can use the potty “ It didn’t take long for my little guy to want to use it. The flush scared him at first but once he got used to it he was fine. I suggest using the seat that attaches to your actual toilet rather than a potty stool, because you will only have another transition and more clean up withthe stool.
