Possibly stupid/genius question

Has anyone else ever noticed that the phrase “2 heads are better than one” sounds kind of odd?

I always say it “2 heads is better than one”. I know that sounds weird too, purely because of language rules. But isn’t it kind of a “(Having) 2 heads is better than (having) one” meaning?

I know it doesn’t actually mean that you want to have 2 heads, although that would be sweet. But the normal phrasing seems to be saying that these 2 heads are better than this 1, for whatever reason.

Anyway, has anyone else ever had this thought? Do you say it like I do? Do I sound like a raving lunatic?

Answer #1

in my opinion,

“Two heads are better than one” implies two people. “Two heads is better than one” implies a person with two heads.

Answer #2

no, you’re not crazy. it’s a figure of speech, so it’s hard to know whether to go with the literal meaning or the intended meaning…and then it will still sound weird.

Answer #3

it’s a simile type metophore thingy!! Say it how you want! IT’s fine as long as you know the meaning!

Answer #4

Do I sound like a raving lunatic?

…not really… you sound stoned.
