my son had the same issue the special ed sounds bad but its really not all it is a little extra help to get him on the right track in which I think it’s better to go through this while they are young and not when they are in high school where it would be much harder on the child from its peers

He’s FOUR; the teacher is probably just a bit overworked and the easiest solution is to pass him off to somebody else. This happens way too often; a perfectly ‘normal’ child is put into special education classes because the teacher doesn’t have the time, nor wants to make the effort, to give him the one on one attention he needs. It is WAY to early to be putting him in a special education class. If he were developmentally delayed, his PEDIATRICIAN would have noticed it by now. If anything, he needs more one on one attention from a different teacher, one who isn’t too ‘busy’ to do her job. But he should be just fine where he is. All kids learn at their own pace, and in their own way. He’s just starting out; he’s just getting the hang of this- in his own time, he’ll get where he needs to be.

I would recommend you practice with him. He’s four, just BARELY out of toddler hood, so make it fun if you can. Try to get him to write each letter of his name with a different color, then if he can go back and correctly identify each COLOR he gets a cookie (or a quarter… something). If he spells his whole name correctly, he gets a ton of praise. There are stores (hobby lobby for example) that sell stickers, and home-education kits. Get some of that special paper they have for teaching kids to write… they look like “roads”. _

                                                   - - - - - - - - - -
                                                   ___

(the dash will be centered between the two solid lines) Then practice writing letters. As for speech, talk to him like an adult ALL of the time (don’t use super huge words, obviously, but don’t baby-talk him). Engage him in conversation. Also, have his eyesight and hearing checked. A lot of little ones’ eyes are overlooked as a potential hindrance to education and some of them are perfectly smart kids who can’t SEE what they’re being taught. Just a thought.

Good luck with your son- I’m sure he’s just fine. If you’re not sure, do as Ty said and contact a professional. But don’t go off of what one teacher says; he’s just a little boy. :)

Well my 5 yr old who was 4 just a couple of months ago started preschool this year and they put him in a special ed class and he has grown up so much his speech has improved tremendously he can write his name now everything so my advice would be to put him in the spec ed class and don’t let him be behind a year

I do not know much about the system. I do know this, that once in special ed, it is hard to get out. And then you end up learning nothing and a degree from high school that is worth as much as toilet paper. Consult a professional if possible to figure out what is going on. The teacher is just trying to make their own life easier.
