Is playing guitar causing nerve damage?

Well iv been playing guitar for about a month now. I’m determined to learn so iv been practicing non stop. But iv noticed that iv lost a noticeable amount of the feeling in my pinky and ring finger since starting. Anybody who plays guitar knows it cant take a toll on your fingers, you have to build calluses and such. But it seems to be getting worse. Is this something i should worry about? Is it normal?

I’ve been playing for 25 years and can remember the the finger pain when I started, so here is my advice: Beginners have a tendency to push “too hard” on the strings when making chords and this can really hurt your fingers. Remember the strings only have to make good contact with the fret. If you have to push really hard for the chord to sound clear, then your strings may be too high and the guitar needs adjustment or “set up” it’s called. Most music stores can do this for you & it’s very inexpensive. There is also a pruduct called finger ease which helps, but it also keeps you from building calluses which you need to be able to play for long periods of time. As far as nerve damage goes, I guess it’s possible, but I wouldn’t consider it an issue. Also light guage strings (as opposed to medium or heavy guage) may help too. Don’t give up, if you really wanna play, the rewards can be great once you get there. If I can be of any more help, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best

Thank you this helps a lot! And it’s a really crappy used guitar that iv been having to practicing on until i get a new one so ya, i have been having to press really hard. But thank you. And i wont give up.

Your quite welcome. It’s really pretty easy for the guitar store to set the action on your guitar and lower the strings for ya if they are high off the fret board. In many cases, I’d say they can do it while you wait.

Thank you, I think I’ll do just that. Xx
