Can petroleum jelly be used on open wounds?

i fell off a bike and have a bleeding knee with scrapes, should i use the petroleum on it?

Answer #1

I don’t think so although I’m not positive. I really think you’d be better cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide, use one of those healing creams (or sprays, like Neosporin or whatever) if you want, and putting a band-aid on it …

Answer #2

If you’re placing it on a clean wound, it won’t cause any harm, but neither will it help. Stick to antibiotic ointments like Polysporin.

Answer #3

Petroleum jelly is actually pretty good for road rash. It keeps it from drying out and scaring. Jacqueline is right that using an antibiotic ointment is a better choice though. You should also cover the area with a surgical bandage (one that won’t stick to wounds); Tegaderm is probably your best bet and you can usually find it in any drug store; Duoderm is even better but hard to find outside of hospital burn units.

Answer #4

Hydrogen Peroxide isn’t good for road rash and many other wounds. Peroxide actually causes more damage to injured tissue. Peroxide is good for dissolving dried blood, pus, scabs, ear wax, and things like that but it isn’t good for open wounds.
