3 yr old Poodle/Bischon mix an aspirin or ibuprofen for his fever?

Is it safe to give my 3 yr old Poodle/Bischon mix an aspirin or ibuprofen for his fever? He has been licking on ice …he has NO other symptoms. He is a picky eater, so his eating pattern is normal and seems to be urinating fine.

usually its ok.. but you should speak to a vet to see how much to give him.. my vet used to reccomend baby tylenol for my cat when he was old and had arthritis…

Hi,

Here is the list of doggie dosages I have:

Buffered Asprin – 5mg/lb, every 12 hrs. Benadryl – 1mg/lb, every 8 hrs. Dramamine – 12.5 mg/25lbs, every 8 hrs. Pepto – 1 tsp/20lb, every 6 hrs. Di Gel Anti Gas – Up to 4 tbs, every 8 hrs. Kaopectate – 1ml/lb, every 2hrs. Immodium AD – 2mg/30lbs, every 8 hrs. Mineral Oil – To relieve constipation, 4tbs. daily Peroxide – To induce vomiting, 10ml by mouth, every 15 min.

For the fever, I would choose to give him Buffered Asprin – 5mg/lb, every 12 hrs. You didn’t say how much he weighs, but it should be easy to calculate 5mg per pound. Feel free to FunMail me if you have questions.

Answer #3

DO NOT GIVE IBUPROFEN!!! EXTREMELY HARD ON THEIR LIVERS!!!

Asprin is ok, but check with the vet for what size the dosage should be, according to her weight. Be sure to get “Coated Asprin” as aspirin is hard on their guts…be sure to feed her first, or she’s liable to puke the aspirin up.

Whatever you do, tho…do not give her Ibuprofen or Tilenal.

we give my dog childrens motrin for his arthritis.

Answer #5

please call a vet.most of our meds are not good for dogs…

Answer #6

It is NOT ok to give dogs acetaminophen (tylenol) or ibuprofen (motrin, advil) as it is toxic.

Dogs CAN have buffered or baby aspirin depending on their size. It is always best to ask your vet.

For arthritic dogs, glucosamine works wonders. There are various medicines for pain for dogs, but in my experience, both personal and professional (I have been a veterinary tech for 16yrs) all have side effects, such as liver cancer - so unless condition is severe, stick with the aspirin and glucosamine if you can.
