7-yr old parakeet laying eggs

We have a single parakeet who has begun laying eggs for the first time at the age of 7. we are worried about her as she spends an inordinate amount of time on the floor of her cage as she is laying the egg. she sits on the egg as if trying to await its hatching and does not eat or drink until we take it away. she has laid nearly 1 egg/week for the last 3 months. any counsel will be gratefully received.

Same thing happend to me . 1st off take the eggs away . 2nd check the food , if you have recently bought new food look to see if its fertel food to make them fertel . Thats what happened to me .

Answer #2

I do not know much about birds, but I do know that the constant laying of eggs can severely deplete her calcium. I’d look up or call a vet to see if you can get calcium supplements for her, or else it can turn into a serious condition.

Answer #3

I’ve heard of something like this happening before. If she has not been impregnated then there is not much to worry about., I would just take the eggs away from her since they don’t have any fetus inside and they would just end up breaking. I would not be worried about her age and laying since some birds (varies in species and bird to bird) have a genetic switch that fires and they rapidly start producing eggs where they did not before.
