Do you think people take trying to be unique a little to far to the point they just look stupid?

I know every style and trend starts off with someone thinking it is stupid, but im open minded and like most styles and trends but sometimes what some people wear just is ridiculous and clashes and is not appealing on the person. It brings out bad qualities in their body types and looks bad.

Sometimes, but people also take trying to fit into the such an extreme as well. Though personally I think it’s not the fact that they push the boundaries to look “unique” that makes them look stupid(well, mostly, others may just do it for attention, some may do it knowingly and not care or bcuz that’s what they were aiming for), rather some just don’t know how to pull it off, what works with their body types, etc.

yes, some people take it to the extreme, but that would mainly be for attention. I say if you like something, get it, wear it, rock it. Do what you want to do and wear what you want to wear…

I’m fine with people trying to be unique, but when it gets to the point where they aren’t even themselves anymore is when it bothers me. I’m all for people showing their individuality and uniqueness, however when some people do, they start trying too hard to be different, that just shows me they’re no different than anyone else.

I think “trying to be unique” is just a way for people to find their identities. Its really hard to find yourself in today’s society, because there is so much choice and opposing massages around us. Take me for example: I like Emo and Goth styles and music, but at the same time I cry during Disney movies, watch Hannah Montana and listen to classical music. Where exactly do I fit in? I’m a one woman contradiction zone! And its ok. This is why its so hard to find your identity and thus experimenting with different ideas and looks is just a way of finding one self. Yea, some people take it to far and isn’t it weird how trying to be unique is kind of a new trend all together? But if you think about it, its not such a new trend after all. Many groups have tried “not to fit in” and thus created a new trend. Like the Goth trend or the Emo trend. These trends are all about being “unique” or “different”, but when allot of people are doing the same thing, you’re just trying to fit into a group again.

“Looking stupid” is just a matter of time and place. Because “stupid looks” are generally stupid because they are absurd and unusual to the beholder.

A normal teen from a small town in Montana may look completely out of place and like a country bumpkin on a schoolyard in LA, while the average LA kid would seriously draw attention on any Montana schoolyard.

Some things look stupid when they are out of context. In another time and place they’d be completely normal or even desirable. So if you see a guy with an 80ies mullet hairstyle, he sure looks stupid. In 1983, he’d have been über-cool. If you see a guy with a medieval gown, a chain-mail armor and a sword crossing main street, he does look stupid. But he’d have been normal in 1352 in France. And if you could time travel, and went to France 1352, wearing jeans and a t-shirt…

Some stupid looks of today may become the usual looks or the cool looks of tomorrow. Some other stupid looks of today will never be cool or normal, but always remain stupid.
