Why do you think most people judge by appearance?

Answer #1

We are judgmental beings. We judge so we can categorize people or things to make it easier for us to know about something without taking the time to talk to the person, or knowing them.

Answer #2

i guess that kinda makes sense o.e but it’s stupid.

Answer #3

Because appearances are the first thing you see, and people always need to put people into certain groups straight away to make it easier for them to figure them out, and to give them an idea of how to sort of approach them. That way, going by the stereotypes that have been drilled into their heads, they can decide if they want to get to know the person or not, and things like that. It’s just human nature xD

And anyway, imo, appearances (clothes, posture, etc.) do say a lot about a person. That’s why my clothes always have to look nice xD I feel that clothing and such reflect personality.

Answer #4

eh. i search for a person i can get along with. :p

Answer #5

i agree with connor. think of it as the saying don’t judge a book by its cover, and think of how many time you’ve done it despite the saying lol. i mean from the way you dress yourself is the way you express yourself and shows how much you care about yourself. its the nature of people to judge b4 knowing. i mean you look at a girl who is dressed really nice has a perfect smile and you think wow shes pretty then you see someone is raggety clothes and a few missing teeth you think not as nice things. i also think it has to do to with the way you grew up and how you were taught to treat people and how your parents treated people. in most cases the way you think is conditioned into you.

Answer #6

Appearance is the first thing you get from someone. And people usually make a judgment about someone they meet within the first seconds. There is no way to get to know someone in this short time.

Now there are people who will stick with their first impression and there are people who will revise their opinions. Some folks just never bother to get to know other people and like to keep it distant and superficial. They will never get any way other than appearance to judge other folks. Most people will come to a different judgment when they know you for a while.

Answer #7

umm….well..it depends on the people…appearences are generally the first impressions…

Answer #8

Because it’s hard wired into our brains. For millennia what kept people alive was immediately being able to tell whether another person belonged to the same group ‘i.e. the ‘in’ group’ or another group. If someone belongs to an outside group you probably want to be able to tell instantly in order to figure out quickly whether this person is a threat or not. We do the same thing. We figure out, by the way people are dressed, groomed, and other defining features, whether we can trust these people or not. Call it stupid if you want, but it kept us alive for a long time.

Answer #9

We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover!” Unfortunately, we do, it’s not nice but we do it anyways. The most common reason we tend to judge a person right away by their appearance are for security reasons.

Although most people won’t admit it, we’re all a little insecure and sometimes don’t feel like we’re up to par with the standards set by the hoi polloi. This leads us to look down at people who’s clothes are not in fashion, or if their hair is all funky, etc. Not because we like to be mean (although some do), but because it helps them to feel better about themselves, knowing that they don’t look like that and are more acceptable to what other people think.

When we see someone who looks like a perfect 10, we tend to get fascinated with their appearance but at the same time look down on their own. Which is a shame, because this alters their personality and behavior in order to “fit in.”

It’s not only the social level that judges people by their looks, but it also goes on at the professional level as well. In the corporate world, it’s almost impossible to get or keep a job if you don’t wear a suit and tie. Your hair must be clean cut and you must be clean and proper. Otherwise, you’ll be looked upon as someone who has no respect for themselves, therefor wouldn’t have any respect for the company or the people he/she works with. They’ll be looked at as incompetent.

It’s sad to say, but overweight people are less likely to get hired for a job than skinny to average weight people. It’s a tough and pressured world.

Answer #10

dont judge a book by its cover.

Answer #11

from an early age we are taught to judge people… we judge because people precieve external imgaes first off… do they have stains on their clothes? are their shoes dirty? these all indicate that people don’t care about their hygiene.. which is a basic instinct.. to be clean is to (primate) way of removing any traces.. but thats a whole lot of psychology there… people do judge, name brands and designers are the definition of shallow.. but the real judgement is about primitive instincts and our basic needs… if someone is overweight, they eat to much, primatly, they use more resources than needed… hygiene, they allow their scent to be more easily detected.. and fundamentally, mating, we look at opposite sex as potential breeding.. do they hold qualities that will benefit your young? … humans and primates are not so different in reality,,,

Answer #12

Appearances you see first, and then you see personality, character, and other things.
