Why do people still cling to religion?

OK, in many circumstances in which I’ve argued about theology (BTW I’m an atheist), the justification for horrible “commandments” such as:

Anyone who dreams or prophesizes anything that is against God, or anyone who tries to turn you from God, is to be put to death. (Deuteronomy 13:5)

If anyone, even your own family suggests worshipping another God, kill them. (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)

If you find out a city worships a different god, destroy the city and kill all of it’s inhabitants… even the animals. (Deuteronomy 13:12-15)

Kill anyone with a different religion. (Deuteronomy 17:2-7)

What i do not see is how people can say :it was OK for people those days”. Then why would one follow a book not suited to these days? and for those who pick and choose what parts of their own religion to follow, are you really a true part of that religion? or just labeled as such?

People believe it as a matter of blind faith. . I guess you similarly believe in sub-atomic particles such as protons and electrons ( without ever having seen, touched, tasted, heard or smelled them ) as a matter of “faith”. . I am sure you also believe, and accept, that a knowledge of how to manipulate sub-atomic particles lead to the development of nuclear bombs with the deliberate intention of using them to kill huge numbers of people - in a manner in which they have indeed been used, ….. . ….. and that they are still being produced in order to intimidate and subjugate countless millions more. . The threats contained in the Bible are peanuts compared to the threats elsewhere, and I guess some people would rather believe in the message of love and mercy conveyed in the Gospels rather than the threats of mutually assured annihilation maintained with hostile menace by the nuclear powers ….. . ….. who seem to me to be all too willing to go and kick ass on any little nation that is not capable of fighting back on an even playing field. . God at least seems to have repented of his sins, and promised not to drown everyone in another deliberate and mindlessly indiscriminate flood. .

I think people cling to religion because they fear death. Nobody knows what happens after death thus the unknowing is what people fear. Religion gives people hope and helps them fear this unknown part of life a bit less. As for people choosing some parts of a religion and not others, I think its because nobody fits into their religion 100%. Its impossible, because everyone is different. And not only this, but times are changing and people want to fit their religion into their “now”. They are trying to make something that they want to believe in, and was created how ever many years ago, fit into our time period. They want to keep their faith, but have it fit into their current lives… Yea, this might not be “right”, according to many scriptures, but in the end it helps people with their fear of death, or helps people live an ethical or “good” life, or just comforts them in some other way.

Hi. I’m a christian and I most certainly cling to my faith because I have personally seen my loving God move in my life and in others lives around me. I read the verses you put up and I dont know how to explain them but I DO know they are taken out of context. But to answer your question why do people cling to religon? I would say this: I have been hurt A LOT in my life. People have left me, but God hasnt. When I pray and talk to God, I can feel his presence around me and I know He is real. Personally, I am really sad that you dont know God but I do know for sure that He wants to know you better. I cling to religion because its the only stable ground that is left in this world. And I pray that you will somehow see that.

I’d disagree with the threats in the bible are peanuts bit. God did kill every single animal on the earth except those on the ark (and the sea creatures, and plants somehow survived too). I dont think humans have quite that capacity to decimate quite yet. Also, you are comparing believing in one thing vs. worshipping another. No one’s out worshipping the science that allows mur.der. They are worshipping this God.

Your argument is that because people don’t believe in or follow every single thing that a religion states, that they don’t really belong to their religion? Seriously? People belong to all sorts of things, with all sorts of rules, without agreeing a 100% about everything. Do all democrats believe in the same exact thing? How about all the members of sports organizations, or clubs? People have always picked and chosen what they believe and what they follow. If everyone had to think the same exact way in order to belong to any group, we would have no groups. Humans as a species have figured out ways to hold onto individuality and yet submit to community at the same time. Religion is no different. It’s a hollow argument. As for picking a book more suited to this day, well that is simple, it’s a book that comes from God. Who apparently didn’t find a need to update it. And they have to interpret it. But some parts are literal. It’s all a matter of convenience and hypocrisy. Yes, I know, the mental gymnastics it takes is amazing. But so what. People are happy in their delusions. Let them be.

i did once believe in him. My parents indoctrinated me into religion . But as i grew i look for evidence. nothing from him (as in no evidence of him existing) so i stopped.

Answer #7

Well it seems to me a tad bit silly to say you believe something, hen u only believe what you like hearing. Its not a belief in God as the bible describes him, its a belief in God as your parents and school (possible) forced into your life when you where young.

Answer #8

I don’t cling to my religion. I cling to G!d. My religion simply provides a repertoire of means by which G!d, in partnership with all the generations of my teachers, has enabled me to do that.

You, on the other hand, appear (at least in this question) to be clinging to your own nightmare of a religion that neither you nor, I daresay, anyone you’ve ever met, adheres to, in order to justify your anti-religious sentiment.

And so what? The idea of a higher power predates the bible. What has the bible got to do with anything?
