Will hair dye fumes hurt my parrot?

I have an african Grey Parrot and I see on all the toxic pages that hair dye is Toxic to parrots. Does anyone know if it is just if the hair dye is eaten?

I would like to still dye my hair at home but want to make sure that my parrot will not harmed by the fumes.. Does anyone know?

I also just came BACK from the hair salon and am super anxious at going upstairs to get my 2 parrotlets that I love to hang out with. I usually let them hang out on my shoulder and play in my hair but if anything ever happened to either of them, I’d die! I had foils all over my head so in comparison to other posts, my situation doesn’t sound very bad as I got them done someplace else. I guess I’ll tie my hair up and change and I should be OK?

Answer #4

…just put your parrot in a different room while you dye your hair it’s not like he has to watch you.

Answer #5

I’m not sure. Maybe if you kept him in a different room for a bit?

I don’t know. I’ll look on the internet. If I find anything I’ll report back,

It most certainly is is harmful to a parrot. A parrot’s respiratory system is very sensitive, and most hair dyes contains stuff like peroxide and other things that can make your parrot very ill. Fumes from many things we use at home can be deadly to your bird, especially fumes from hair dyes, household cleaners and even nonstick cookware, and can cause your parrot to die an agonizing death. Rather err on the side of caution and don’t dye your hair near your parrot. If you have to, put your parrot outside in a safe place if you can (in his or her cage, of course) or at least provide plenty ventilation.
