Parents and Girlfriend

So I’m an 18 year old male and I’ve recently started dating a 35 year old woman who lives 2 states away. I’ve stayed a week at her house and have been dating/talking to her everyday since around September ‘07. Lately since my parents/family have found out there has been nothing but fighting and arguing everyday. I get nothing but criticism and hearing how bad of a decision it is to be dating her. Recently my parents have shut my phone off, taken my car away, and have threatened to cut off all contact with her. I really want to go to college but the college I’ve wanted to go to since I started high school just so happens to be 2 hours closer to her, so they will no longer assist me in attending that college. Her coming into my life has caused nothing but fights with my mom, me getting my stuff taken away, and my brothers/sister constantly making fun of me. I’m still stuck on making my family happy and just not worrying about my happiness, but I’m too worried about disappointing my parents. I’m at the age to where I should put my happiness before my parents, but I feel like I would be disrespecting them or something if I move out and live with her. But the real question is how do I tell my parents that I want to move out and live with her without them completely disowning me? If anyone can help I’d totally appreciate it, if you need to know more about the situation message me and let me know. I just need some advice big time and I need it kind of quick please.

I guess your family is scared that because she is older she will manipulate you or hurt you in some way. I can’t help but think that they are just trying to protect you because they still see you as someone too young to know any better. True that 18 years old is still very young and I imagine it’s scary to see your son with someone much older. They probably think they you’ll be unhappy and maybe not have a chance for “normal” relationship with someone your own age since your needs and wants compared to hers are so different. I think they see you as a little boy, unaware of all this and they probably think that they can still manipulate you because they have the economic control over your life. This is where you have to try to explain to them one last time, calmly, no screaming, no getting angry, just explain to them that you are not a little boy anymore, that you are a young man. Explain to them that you care about this person, that you are aware that it might not work out because of the age difference but that you still want to try. Explain that you have the right to choosing your partners and that you love them dearly but they can not control your life. Explain how much you care about them, how you wish they would just be proud of you and support you. If they still can’t accept after all that, then you’ll just have to remain calm, show them your mature enough to make your own decisions, tell them that you’ll call them every week (and do!) but that it’s time to go your own way for a little while. I really hope they continue to help you in your studies though. Try to convince them on the importance of their assistance. They’ve supported you so far, trusted you, help you become the young man that you are, try to help them see that you aren’t so this to hurt them, that you aren’t naive, you just want to grow up. It seems bad now but they’ll get you use to it in time, they have to grow up too! Good luck!!!

Your 18. You know if you love her. tell them that they cant stop yolur feelings. My dad wa 18 and my mom was 32 and if it wasnt for them being in love I would not be here!!! Is the car in your name? I would take the car and be with her they will come around someday

I understand. if you love this girl tell your parents that. If they say they love you they would respect your feelings.

Your family is terrible, and you have to know and understand this, and I would never forget this behavior for them. Your relationship is really uncommon, so you might get some nasty jokes on it and on you, but this is the maximum what you have to admit from them. And nothing more. That is only your business who you date with. On the other hand a “learned” lady is just useful for a 18 yo young man, at least for a while. I do not know how you can (or cannot) struggle for your rights, but I would not let my family to block my freedom in this respect. Never.

Answer #5

They should love you no matter what you do or who you’re with.

My boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend was 24 years older than him! He went through the same things with his family, but finally they just had to accept it because that’s who he fell in love with at the time.

Now they got a breath of fresh air with me… I’m 4 years YOUNGER than him! lol
