What happens in an oral cancer screening?

I have the paper back from my Dentist telling me I have an oral cancer screening and various other things I would have asked but I just signed it thinking he had only included 1 thing so I went before I could ask. I’m quite worried about this as I’ve never had one before and have no clue what happens during one of these. Also, it this a routine thing? I’d be glad if anyone could tell me what happens during one and if they’ve ever had one done.

I am not entirely sure, but I would imagine it would involve a visual examination and taking some cells for microscopy, which is very easy and painless. Its not routine in New Zealand, but it seems like it might be becoming so in other places. I wouldnt be too concerned.
