Do ongoing feelings of depression end?

I’ve had moderate depression for about a year in my life, mixed with a self-tenancies and suicidal feelings. I’m wondering if it’s just a phase, if it will end. Or if there is any way to fix this without a shrink, but by myself.

Some things you can do for yourself but if none of this works then it’s time to talk to your doctor if not a shrink.
Excercise- Regularly at least a half hour every other day and working up a sweat and increased heartrate. Excercise releases the natural “feel good” chemicals into your body.

Diet- A high carbohydrate diet will help the body produce serotonin.

Vitamins - Take a full B complex supplement, magnesium, zinc, and iron.

Learn relaxation and meditation techniques (can get how to books at library) Or take a Yoga class. If you have a creative side, take an art or some other hobby class that can help refocus those blash moods.

Also there is a natural alternative to prescription antidepressants but it’s not for everybody and can have side effects with some. It’s called St Johns Wort and most pharmacy’s carry it.

The rest is obvious, have a good support group around you can talk to. When your feeling blah, think of little ways to reward yourself.and basically be kind to yourself.

If none of these things help, then it’s time to see the doctor. Good luck!

Didn’t know diet affected mood, probably doesn’t help me that I have a bad one.. Thanks for quite the range of help! I’ll try out what I can

Answer #4

Diet has a big impact on depression. People have food alergies that can cause tremendous mood swings, depression, anxiety, etc. Gluoten and/or sugar are just two that can raise emotional havoc if your alergic.

Answer #5

I think it depends on you. If you have the willpower to change your mindset into feeling happy & looking on the brighter side of things, I think you can do that. I’ve been the same way that you have for about 4 1/2 years & I have no desire to change it so I’ve been stuck that way. I don’t think it has much to do with a shrink.

Answer #6

They do in fact end. I used to have problems with depression and self harm but I’ve found other coping mechanisms and I’ve almost completely recovered. You hear so many stories about people overcoming depression but so few of people who have suffered with it their entire lives. That just goes to show that the majority of people overcome depression.
