Old dog isn't well

I have a 14 year old Dachshund/Lab.

Just in the last couple of days, she’s been starting to have ‘accidents’ in the house, and it wasn’t such a huge deal, but today I noticed that her stools are very dry and crumbly.

There hasn’t been any change in her behaviour lately, and she seems to be eating and drinking normally. We also feed her a good quality dog food - nothing cheap.

I understand that the best option is to take her to a vet, which I plan to do, but until I can get her there I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows what could be causing it.

The consitance of her stools may be caused by old age. I’ve noticed that my sisters 18 y/o poodles has had very dry stools for the last few years. As long as she’s going regularily, I’d wait till I get to the Vet to see if there’s anything you can add to her food, that might give her poop a better consistancy.

You’re a good “mom”…having accidents is just part of aging process…glad you don’t see it as a big deal :)

when animals get older sometimes they tend to lose control of there bladder and just cant help but urinate or poop on the floor. when they lose control of there bladder they cant hold it and it just kinda comes out. I would suggest confining her to one area that is lonolium or tile or somthing

Answer #3

I too have an old dog… shes 17 in human years… your dog is just getting old & thats part of it, its hard for them to control bladder functions… though taking the dog to the vet to get something for the stool might be a really good idea

Answer #4

Well, she does have difficulty walking, but she has arthritis. It’s not a new symptom, by any means.

She does sleep an awful lot, though.

Answer #5

A bladder infection? Our Alsatian struggles with it from time to time and has accidents.

Ask your vet about a protein powder for your dog (ours got it and most of his problems got cleared up)

Answer #6

she’s fourteen… could it just be because, she’s old? old dogs start to have accidents, and I think their poops getfunny maybe…

Answer #7

a visit to the vet is the best thing. is she having difficulty walking or is there any other behavior that is different
