Do you think I have OCD?

Because i’ve told my mum this over and over and she keeps on saying that it’s not true. Because i realize that everytime when i help her cook in the kitchen, i have to wash my hands almost every minute because i feel as though they are filthy.. And sometimes i arrange some things perfectly, but if i leave it then it’ll bug me and i can’t stop thinking about it. i hate even numbers, i tend to arrange things in odd numbers, if it isn’t an odd number it’ll drive me crazy (but one of the symptoms of OCD says ‘aversion to odd numbers’, so i’m not sure about that). when i’m on the computer, i have to click the mouse repeatedly (except when i’m typing) and i can’t stop it. Or when i open a cupboard i have to open both sides or else i won’t feel ‘balanced’, and when i close the door at night i have to push the door 3 or 5 times even though i know it is already tightly closed. Can anyone help please?

Everybody is just a little bit ‘OCD’ by nature and the term has fallen into a bit of misuse in common English.

However, it sounds like you are a bit paranoid of this. Going to see a psychologist to get a diagnosis can’t hurt.

You have enough symptoms to be checked out by a doctor. You will need to see your family physician first so they can refer you to a specialist. You have a right to be concerned and perhaps you may want to show your mother what you wrote here so she can better understand that you really do have something to be looked into. Good Luck, Sue
