Nuclear Energy
a. Where does radiation come from? What does radioactive decay have to do with its creation?
b. Explain which type of radiation (Alpha, Beta or Gamma) is considered to be the most dangerous to humans.
c. A specimen of bone originally contained 10g of Carbon-14. When you examine it, the amount has been reduced to 2.5 g. If the half-life of Carbon-14 is 5700 years, how old is the bone? Show your reasoning.
d. Describe the difference, at the atomic level, between fusion and fission.
e. Fusion or fission?
-
Which one is used in our nuclear power plants?
-
Which one is happening in the Sun?
-
Which one creates more dangerous radioactive waste?
-
Which one creates more energy for the amount of material used?
Nuclear Energy
a. Where does radiation come from? What does radioactive decay have to do with its creation? A) radiation comes from the emitted energy (gamma) emitted proton (beta) and emitted electron (alpha) this occurs when the element is in an excited state radioactive decay is the loss of electrons or protons
b. Explain which type of radiation (Alpha, Beta or Gamma) is considered to be the most dangerous to humans. gamma destroys cells and can go through wood but not through lead its the most dangerous
c. A specimen of bone originally contained 10g of Carbon-14. When you examine it, the amount has been reduced to 2.5 g. If the half-life of Carbon-14 is 5700 years, how old is the bone? Show your reasoning. 10/2 = 5 5=5700 years
5/2 = 2.5 2.5=5700 years
5700 + 5700 = 11400
