Answer #3

Of course not, and the answr is simple:

nicknames can be derived in many different ways (which drives foreign students crazy).

Sometimes a shortening from the beginning of the name - William/Will, Michael/ Mick, Kathryn/Kathy

Sometimes a lengthening - John/ Jonny

Sometimes from the end of the end: Elizabeth/Beth, Betsy

Sometimes combinations of (semi-) rhyme and shortening - William/Bill, Richard/Dick

And sometimes very far from the original - so far that people often forget the origin: Margaret/Meg, Maggie, John/Jack
