Well when i get really nervous (which i normally do) my hands shake like mad. i feel like im the only one who has this problem. everyone says “well imagine people in there underpants” but no. once you get up there thats the LAST thing your thinking about. is there any way to calm me down a little? please help ASAP my recitals on the 18th

I’ve played at a recital and have been part of the audience for several. One thing that helps me is that, knowing that most people there, either aren’t really paying attention, getting bored, or just there to watch their kids or friends. That just helps me relax a bit to think that not many people are actually paying attention to me, but then again, it might be discouraging for some.

What I used to do for the bad anxiety I got was to take some beta blockers (it lowers your heart rate, but doesn’t affect your concentration). What I do these days is to make sure that I can both site read the piece perfectly and know it off by heart, that way my nervs are slightly better. Also remember that no one in that room who isn’t performing can play that piece, even the judge as they haven’t practiced it, so they shouldn’t have anything bad to say.

Most musicians I know have problems with nerves. Your best bet is to practice your piece so thoroughly that even if you don’t play your best it will still be pretty good. I’ve come to see nerves as not an entirely bad thing. I’ve had some of my best as well as worst performances in high pressure situations. Sometimes all that adrenaline comes in handy. One of the things that helped me was when I was on the stage was to tell myself that this was my stage and when it is my turn to play I own it. My daughter’s violin teacher gets so nervous when she performs that she literally shakes. She has to take beta blockers to prevent her physical response to nerves else she would have to play everything tremolo.

For me just doing the thing that makes you nervous over and over again so that u get used to it, just like getting used to the water at the pool!

Also think positive thoughts and try not to think about it to much. And remember i am sure you are not the only one nervous!
