My puppy might be partially blind, what can we do?

My husband and I just got a 12 week old great dane puppy. When he was just a few weeks old, he was playing with his mom and she bit him a little too hard. She actually bit him through his right eye. It looks like there is an abscess on it and the whole eye is solid black now. It’s a lot bigger than his left eye as well. The lady we got him from said that her vet said that there’s nothing wrong with his eye besides the fact that he is probably blind in that one eye. She told us that we have the option to get surgery on the eye for the puppy. We just don’t know what we should do. The eye doesn’t look that great but at the same time, if it doesn’t bother him then I don’t want to put him through the pain of removing the eye. What should we do?

Answer #1

I wouldnt remove the eye..and yeah I dont think he would like that much..and if it doesnt bother him and its not a bad thing…then why bother?

Answer #2

Take the dog to your OWN vet. It is ridiculous for her vet to give a diagnosis without examining the dog. Obviously the eye condition has changed.

Answer #3

we just got the dog today and she took the puppy to the vet again yesterday to get the eye checked again..from what she has said, theres nothing wrong with his eye. just damage from the bite itself..we plan on taking the pup to the vet monday but if they give us that option, I still dont know what to do..

take him to a vet. he should be seen to make sure he is ok. One of our dogs had a eye problem and was blinded in it, and he did fine, you just have to watch cause they will loss some of there depth sight, bear our dog, he had to have his eye removed and if he was not seen he could have died because infection can get into the eye. so have him seen right away! odds are he will be ok in the end but I would never take that risk and then later find out there was something they could have done but he was not seen and ended up dieing.

Answer #5

Ditto ditto ditto…get an opinion other than that of the person you got dog from? The loss of an eye to a dog is no big deal…unlike humans, they use their noses more than their eyes. I think tho, that finding out more about the actual condition of the eye…ie: pressure within it, etc…would be the best thing to do. Not to mention, a relief to you, to really KNOW everything there is to know about it.

If the right eye is bigger than the other, it could be a massive swelling and could be filling with fluid. I do animal rescue and have seen this before. I had a kitten with a seemlingly fine eye and it was much larger than the other one. It happened to be that her eye was heavy with fluid and infection. My vet told me that it hurt her greatly. Some animals don’t show pain like you think they would. We ended up having to put the kitten down. I’m not saying that my answer is final, reason being, that great danes and kittens are much different from each other. But, it seems to be the same situation. Take that dog to the VET. Of course the person you recieved your dog from would say that she was fine. More than likely, she was breeding for money and didn’t want to skip out on a quick sale. Backyard breeders will do that to you. Eye removal might be the result in all this, but quite costly. Get your dog to the vet ASAP.
