Hi,

Are you looking for statistics?

An estimated 4.6 percent (1.2 million) of male veterans and 7.0 percent (5.3 million) of male nonveterans had Serious Mental Illness (SMI) in 2002 and 2003.

Personally, I think these numbers are underreported. Not to mention, females are not even reported on…

It also depends on the individual. Some can cope with what they do and see others can’t. If you are thinking of joining the Army but feel that maybe you couldn’t cope with the traumatic sights you will see then maybe you could apply for a job in the army that doesn’t take you into action or near action. The training is mentally hard anyway, so think seriously if you are considering joining up. I think its hard to really say in advance, who will cope and who won’t. Post Traumatic Stress happens to many. My partner was in the British Army and still gets the occassional nightmare, though i’m yet to see him have one, but he won’t talk to me about many of his army experiences.

Good luck.
