Mentally handicap

What would happen to mentally handicap people later in life? Would they get married in some point and have children or would they just be alone? What would happen to them if there parents aren’t around anymore to look after them who would look after them then?

Answer #1

It depends on how handicapped they are, IQ doesnt determine how well you can live your life and do things you need to do… we refer it as their functioning and it is measured by the SIS (which measures how much support they need), how much they can take care of themselves, work, form relationships etc… so obviously someone who is very low functioning is going to be either at home or in some sort of institution their entire life… you also have to remember that people with down syndrome for example have lower life expectancies… people who are higher functioning can eventually work, form relationships and have children… (depending on what sort of developmental disorder, they would generally be with other people who have mental handicaps, or some people can form relationships with so called “normal” people…)

A lot of times if the situation is that they cant live at home with their parents for whatever reason they live with siblings or another family member. There are also group homes that arent an institution. The institutions today are njothing like they were when this idea was first brought up. Today they are more like living in campus dorms with regulated diets and monitored activity. I was an I/O provider for the mentally handicapped and had a client who had been married twice and had a son of which she took very good care. They are like everyone else. NOt all unhandicapped people get married or have kids but have a very normal social life. Most persons who are severly handicapped dont live in to old age due to their illnesses b/c their immune systems are generally weak from the medications they must take. So the choices are: 1. Live with a relative

                2. Live in a group home
                3. Live ina retirement home
                4. Sadly enough die

Pretty much what a lot of people do later in life
