In the lyric "Starry, Starry Night", what is the apostrophe (the literary term)?

Answer #1

First it helps to know the definition of apostrophe. It means “a figure of speech in which someone absent or dead or something nonhuman is addressed as if it were alive and present and was able to reply.” I’m pretty sure the apostrophe would be Vincent Van Gogh. Don Mclean addresses Vincent Van Gogh as if he’s still alive and listening. (“On that starry, starry night you took your life as lovers often do – but I could’ve told you, Vincent: this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” We know it’s Vincent Van Gogh because he has a painting called “Starry Night”, and also because there are other hints in the song that refer to him.
