How long should you rest a torn rotator cuff?

Answer #1

Quite some time, my father had his rotator cuff worked on. It’s in a sling, so I’d definitely say put that in a sling. Depending on HOW bad you hurt it, I’d say 2 weeks would be a good time. Then again none of us are docs, so I’d go see your Doc about it. Torn rotator cuffs aren’t nothing to play around with

Answer #2

I have been resting it for about 4 weeks now. It wasnt very bad i went to the doctors he said it should feel better in one week and it didnt. It started feeling better just last week. I now only have some pain when i wake up. I am just wanting to start up doing my brazilian jiu-jitsu and kickboxing again. When did your dad start slowly doing regular things again?

Answer #3

He’s still out right now. If it hasn’t been getting any better at all, I’d say take a trip back to him and tell him whats been going on. Naturally you should feel some sort of ease especially with 4 weeks of resting it.

Answer #4

Alright thanks. I hope your dad feels better i know how much it sucks.

Answer #5

You should ask your orthopedic surgeon. Some rotator cuff injuries require surgery followed by physical therapy. I have a partially torn rotator cuff that has been bugging me for over a year but since I had more serious health issues an achy shoulder wasn’t even on the radar screen.

Answer #6

Thanks for your response but I am lucky it wasn’t that bad I don’t need surgery the doctor said. It is feeling a lot better i am just not sure if it is to early to start doing my classes again. It has been a total of 4 weeks of resting.

Answer #7

Depending on the damage it can take anywhere from 3 - 7 weeks You will have a bit of trouble lifting things and your grip may be a bit loose for up to 3 months, be sure to train your arm again after the general pain is gone, leaving it to rest for too long will make your muscles lose their tone…. Your posture is also important, damages to the shoulder lead to bad posture which themselves lead to changes in the spine…. be sure to stretch your muscles every so often, helps loosen the muscles a bit so they wont cramp up
