How can I make friends when I'm always moving?

okay, so I’m a 17 year old girl. the thing is, my dad keeps getting transferred from place to place, and that makes it really hard to stay in touch with my friends. I’ve always been pretty shy and have trouble opening up to people. the last time we moved, I really didn’t want to and I kept trying to convince my dad to send me back to the old town to live with some relatives (who would have loved to have me). anyway, he didn’t let me, and as a result, I just didn’t make much of an effort to get to know many people. this was 2 years ago. I’m now in a long distance relationship with a boy I met 5 months ago while on vacation. and everything is going great (for the most part). other than him, I have like, 1 or 2 good friends. who all live in a different city. I’ve made friends here as well, but I’ve just not been able to ‘connect’ with them. I tried, I swear. its just that, they’re NOTHING like me. I cant relate to them. its not the same as a REAL friend. I try to read a lot to keep myself occupied, but too much of something can really get on my nerves. I’m just so BORED of my life. I feel really pathetic and inadequate and I HATE feeling like this. sometimes my boyfriend senses that I’m upset and asks me about it. but what am I supposed to tell him? that his girlfriend is the biggest loser this side of the equator? besides, he has enough problems of his own: he doesn’t need mine too. my relationship with my family is pretty good, especially my mom. I can really talk to her and stuff, but its not ENOUGH. please tell me what to do. like I said, its not easy for me to make friends. approaching people makes me feel awkward.
