Look for the foxfire books. Also look for “The Backwoodsman” magazine. Both are good sources for old style frontier skills and info. Look for info on “Stackwood” building on the web. Just search “Stackwood”. There are two basic types of log cabins - vertical logs (quite uncommon) and horizontal logs. No matter what you do, a few basic tools are called for. A 3 or 3.5 lb axe, for felling, trimming and shaping logs. A broadaxe for shaping and squaring logs. A brace and bit for boring holes for pegs, unless you are going to use 12” spikes instead of wooden pegs. A draw blade for peeling the logs.

You’ll probably build a few before you are really satisfied that you have it right. I would build a basic shed first, with dirt floor and simple notched logs. Once I had that down, I would work on a cabin with a finished floor and dove-tailed logs.

Do a little searching on the net and a lot of reading before you start. You’ll get an idea in your head of what you want to accomplish. Do some planning before you start, and have fun!
