Living on your own by 17
I’m 16 years old.I wont be 17 until 9/27, but I eagerly want to move out.I know people will try to tell me not to but I’ve made my final choice to leave home when I’m 17. I doing my research on what’s the typical rent /energy/water/heating bill for south Carolina.I’m currently looking for a job so I can save up the money for a cheap yet working car.I’m not trying to runaway & be famous (like most people think I’m trying to do.)but I want to live independently on my own.I’m single so don’t think I doing this cause I in love with some boy.I hate having to depend on people, especially my parents cause they automatically assume that since I don’t listen to them that I’ll never get any where in life.Well yes, I get that but honestly it’s cause no matter how nice/good I try to be they look down on me or if I ask to calmly talk it out they flip the situation, only pointing out my bad points. So I’ve had it with them.So far I figure I can buy my own cell phone get a cheap plan instead of a phone bill.I’m not sure what else I need to know.Food wouldn’t cost a lot if a shopped at dollar general, and wash my clothes at the 99 cent laundromat. My education is a must a well but I don’t know how much that will cost.and what about my heating and cooling, electricity ,and water? Please help I want to prepare my self as soon as possible.
oh btw at 17 you need your parents to co sign because you are still their responsibility
If both parents agree, you can legally become an adult by 16 !
those are just the basics, there is also food stamps available and single female loans im sure you could get, im not to sure about all that but look into it. Leap is also pretty good I hear.
there is a lot to look into moving out is a big step I suggest talking to your parents about it because they know what to do especially now. Try to think reasonably on the situation. not that im trying to talk you out of it. Look at the situation realistically before doing it. maybe find a roomate that you would trust to help with bills and groceries.
I don’t believe you can live out on your own until 18 years old and no you can’t live forever washing clothes at 99 cent store place or eat at dollar general…you’ll get sick of it. Sooner or later you need to depend on people and they’re just not gunna be there, first you should get a full education so that you can apply for jobs, get the job, then go rent own house and everything. A working car that’s barely working won’t be working for long.. sooner or later it’ll break and cost more money you also has insurance to take care of.
there is a lot to consider about moving out especially now with our economy being at such a loss. if you want to live somewhere pretty crummy I would say rent at it’s lowest could be 250-350. a Decent place will run about 500 a month. there is also a first and last months rent and deposit, deposit is much higher for new renters, which varys upon your renting history (I hope you have good credit or somebody to co-sign for you that has good credit) utilities vary from place to place. electricity bills can sometimes run up to 200 dollars. Try and find a place that will include all utilities in the rent thats water, heat, electricity, and whatnot. most places require that you make two times as much as your rent. if you dont have any furniture try and find somewhere thats already furnished which would cost more money btw. all in all thats the basics, there is much more to it like signing the lease the average for a lease is 12 months. I recommend having at least 2k before moving out on your own and making at least 800 a month. that may require getting a second job.
as for school you can get many different types of loans. I pay 199 a credit hour for a private school, a community college would be cheaper a university may be 399 a credit hour. You can accumulate a lot of debt this way so I suggest making payments while still in school you could wrack up to $50,000 in debt from school. depending on what field you plan on going into.
ask about a staford loan, you wont have to pay for it until 6 months after you finish schooling (imo thats the best way to go)
insurance at your age is going to be crazy expensive I pay $150 a month for full coverage thats through my moms name. as a female teenage driver your going to pay a lot more a month. get a car with good gas mileage because gas prices are insane..
but yet a good 2k would work for getting you out of the house at first. thats a minimum.
I will tell you it like this im 19 in the military I was just like you I moved out when I turned 17 and I promise you its not as good or fun as it sounds it was extremely hard ya you say you wll save money but that doesnt always work I ended up goig without food for days at a time, sleeping at parks on benchs or in tubes. its the worst thing you could ever do your friends might say can come stay with them but that never works out trust me. you might have it bad living at home with your parents but it could be worse, I still to this day wish I never left and I had it bad my dad beat me almost everyday my mom would constantly start fights between me and her or me and my dad but I would rather go through that then what I went through to try to make it on my own. it doesnt ever go according to plan, and plus with Obama coming in to presidence and the economy of the US going down the toilet it will be the worst decision to move out at that age just please think about it
