Life tv series mid season ending, was it too overdone?

I don’t know if anybody else here watches the police drama “Life” on NBC, but it’s pretty good (we’ve been watching it since last year). However, the mid series ending the main character gets shot and then has this brief period where he’s talking with another character who was killed earlier in the series…personally, I think that was overdoing it & they should have left it at him getting shot.
