I wonder if his behavior on David Letterman’s show was in some way related to his car crash in January 2009. If so I wish him all the best and hope people would reserve judgment and respect his privacy by giving him space and the time he is entitled to as a human being who’s been through more than one “ordeal”, to heal. He’s had a bizarre childhood, lost a brother, dealt with alcoholism, and most recently was involved in a car crash and was subject to ridicule from the audience on David letterman’s show when he declared his interest in pursuing a “pop” music career. Has anyone stopped to think that he may still be recovering not necessarily physically but emotionally from his crash, and maybe even other more deeply rooted issues that are nobody’s business but his own. Can the public not be a little less judgmental, quick to laugh, quick to harass and question his every decision or action and maybe cut the man some slack.

There is also one other possibility. Casey Affleck is directing a documentary tracking the musical career of Joaquin Phoenix , so this may be a way of drawing interest to the project.
