Is three dogs too many?

Right now I have two dogs. A seven year old australian shepard and a six year old corgi mix. My friends dog had puppies, and I think I’ll get one. I have a big yard and can afford vet care. Will I be able to give the third dog enough attention and love or would I not be abel to give them each one on one attention?

Ditto amoeba…DO NOT bring the pup home without a vet check, first!

If you’ve already “picked” your pup, you can run it into the vet now, get the worming stuff from him (gotta be careful when they are this tiny, because of the wormer/weight ratio)…find out from HIM, when she needs a “puppy shot”…if the mother hasn’t ever been to a vet, then she’s never had the regular 5 or 7 way parvo/distemper/etc…shots, and therefore didn’t have the antibodies in her colostrum…That makes this particular litter of pups VERY vulnerable to some pretty deadly diseases.

Ya know…there are puppies all over the place that may have a healthier background…and since you feel that you can handle 3 dogs, why not go to the shelter, and find one? At least they give shots to the pups that come in…THEN take that pup to the vet, and get a health check…

Your friend shouldn’t even have a dog, let alone a dog with puppies…What can you do to educate her??

I don’t have the dog yet, she’s three weeks old. The mom went in to get spayed when they found out she was pregnant. I would have to pick up just my puppy and then drop her back off.

Answer #3

Also I don’t know if the dog is really healthy. Her mom is only about a year old, and had 8 puppies. Three died within the first few days, probably due to heat. The mother and puppies have never been to the vet. She’s three weeks old now. I don’t want to bring home a sick dog. Should I sugest that I take my puppy to the vet now, or just wait until I bring her home.

Answer #4

Well I saw her a few days ago and she seems fine. I’m just worried about worms. It would be kinda aquward to just take one puppy to the vet, and then drop it back off with the mother. Wouldn’t that seem kinda rude or snobby?

Answer #5

I would take her to the vet ASAP just to make sure everything is alright that way if there is something wrong it’s better to deal with it sooner than later.

Answer #6

I would NEVER bring a new dog into my home without a visit FIRST to the vet. I would not want my dogs exposed to any health issues that I wasn’t aware of. Who cares if it seems snobby to take the dog to the vet and then return it if you decide. Your friend does not sound like a responsible pet owner. She has an unspayed dog that has never been to the vet and probably has repeated litters of puppies. Take the puppy to your vet and then have a talk with your friend. A spayed/neutered pet lives a happier/healthier life. If you own a pet, you should care enough to care for your pet and it doesn’t sound as if your friend is doing that.

Answer #7

NOT AT ALL. I HAD 5 AT ONCE it is not easy but fun!!!

Answer #8

if you think you can handle it and be fair to all three, then I say go for it, go for however many ya want!!! lol

Answer #9

If you think you can handle three dogs then go for it..

Answer #10

My parents are only letting me get this puppy because my friend needs to find homes so bad. I can’t just tell my friend I don’t want the puppy anymore, then turn around and get a new one. I’ll be rescuing this puppy just like the ones at the shelter. I know the one I want, so I’ll try to talk my friends mom into letting me take her for a few hours to see the vet.

well if your parents agree and are fine with it, and you have the space and money to care for it, then I say why not?… as for the paying enough attention part, you can always take turns with your parents or siblings (if you have any)
