Is six years too long to have an unreciprocated crush?

Um, so I’ve had this crush on this one guy for six years. So yes, I’ve had a crush on him since I was eight years old, and I’m now fourteen. He’s two years older than me, being currently sixteen.

Me and him used to be friends when we were kids, and we got along nicely. Then one day when I was eight, he told me that he kind of liked me. We were at church, and being so excited, I ran around the whole church screaming, “_ likes me. He likes me!” After that day, we were never the same. He’d tease me, tell me he hated me, and tell me that I was ugly. And I (stupidly) continued until the age of eleven to embarrass him by professing me ‘love’ to him at random moments. Which I completely understand why he would hate me for that.

So, over the years my crush has gone from puppy love, to obsessive, to desperate, and now I’m just so confused.

I changed schools when I was eleven, so I rarely get to see him. I no longer do stuff to embarrass him, and even try not to talk to him much, but he still dislikes me. I would just be content if he’d be my friend again, but I can’t even do that.

And I plagued by the question, ‘Is it just a crush, infatuation, or do I actually love him?’

I’d really like to tell him I’m sorry for embarrassing him, but I think that would only matters worse.

If he won’t ever come to like me, then I’d like to be able to move on.
