Is it OK to keep my modem on overnight?
Is it ok to leave comp and modem on 24/7 or is it best to turn them off every night?
People have been debating this at least since I got my first computer in ‘85.
One camp says that leaving it on 24-7 uses electricity and wears out your computer faster so you should turn it off when not in use.
The other camp says what wears out computers is power cycling and the stress of components heating up then cooling off.
Some people split the difference and suggest turning it on in the morning then leaving on all day as long as you are using it then shutting it down.
I’m in the leave it on 24-7 camp. I think that the power and heat cycling does more harm than leaving it on all the time. My computers seem to last a long time so I don’t think I’m shortening their life. I do invest in good surge protectors. Leaving them on all the time also allows me to increase my Seti@home work unit count.
The main reason for turning off your modem at night is to keep your home network safe when not in use. If your connection is up then an attacker/virus/security threat can get to your home network. If that connection is down they can’t.
well in fact I actually thought tha it was ok untill we had an elecrical storm, believe it or not it blew up my modem, blew my TV, my dvd player, I called the engenear and he said I was unlucky as I had a surge of power.. great.. I wouldnt mind I live in England this type of thing rarly happens.. so my advice is to turn it off.. better safe than sorry
It would be best to turn it off when you’re not using it. You would save up electricity, thus saving cash. You would also prevent electric problems.
its definatly best to turn them off! its wasting power and doesent do any good for the enviroment. also theyll end up overheating and could cause a fire! so its best to turn them off
If you have a broadband modem - they are designed to be able to be on all the time. It is not a good idea to leave your computer on all the time though - they work best if shut down at the end of each day, and then started up again at the beginning of the day. Keeping it on all the time can overheat components inside the computer, which then can lead to component failure.
At the least, I would say shut your computer down every day, but you could keep your modem on if you wish. But as has been noted above, keeping the modem on will waste power and there is the risk of a surge zapping the electronics.
yes its ok to leave them on thats what I do and I have never had any problems
