Is it OK for Born Again Christians to use IVF Treatment?

Is it OK for Christians to aid conception through IVF or is this going against Gods plan and the natural order of things?

Answer #1

There are multiple opinions regarding this.

The Roman Catholic Church is against In Vitro Fertilization because not all blastocysts are typically used and since the church believes that every zygote has a soul discarding any fertilized eggs is tantamount to murder no mater if it is viable or not.

For other Christians views are all over the map. Some view it as interfering with the will of God while others view it as a gift from God.

One of the nurses at the fertility clinic my wife and I went to had ashes on her forehead on Ash Wednesday. From this I assume she is Catholic because I have never observed Protestants doing this. I always was curious to ask her about her feelings about IVF but I didn’t know her well enough to talk about something that personal. I assume she reconciled her profession and religion somehow.

…not to mention, this question is based on a ‘’natural order’’ of things. So, anything unnatural would be against God? …o…k…

So that means you can’t take vitamins, prescription drugs (I bet there were a lot of pain pills with that spinal injury), no orthodondics, dentists (crowns and fillings are unnatural), etc.

No thanks, I’ve heard many times that living in the Dark Ages SSSUUUCKED.

Okay, this is going to seem harsh… but if the two of you are debating this issue and your decision is to be based on G-d’s plan and if IVF is morally wrong according to your born again beliefs…don’t have a child… sigh…not everyone should have a child…

Also, adoption might be an option… they might not let you adopt a baby but an older child… Or what about fostering?

Or is it just about having your ‘own’ child? and a baby at that…

Thanks smithmax.

To expand on my question… my fiance suffered a T5 spinal cord injury which has left him paralysed from the chest down. We are due to go for tests soon but have been told that it is highly likely that his sperm mobility will be insufficient to concieve naturally. Therefore, in our case, the Serena method wouldn’t be an option.

We have considered adoption but this brings further challenges. We don’t know how easy it would be for us to be approved for adoption as he is in a wheelchair and I will have to work, at least part time to support the family. He is a born again christian and is unsure how IVF will be viewed.

I don’t see how a person can ‘’go against’’ this ‘’plan’’ …if God is omnipotent and omnipresent, that means he knows what will happen anywhere and anytime. So whatever happens, no matter WHAT decision a person makes, is ALL part of the plan.

Which is why the idea of it being ‘planned’ just seems silly.

Answer #6

As far as I know, it is considered morally wrong, although many believe that it is a grey area. There are actually some very effective methods, such as the Serena method, that track a woman’s cycle and allows the couple to try to conceive at the time when biologically the woman is most ready.
