Is Guantanamo the us base is that important?

Im asking for opinions if you want to add facts great if you feel this is homework feel free to say nothing. My view since it was being used as a way to evade us laws it should be closed.

Is Guantanamo important?

Would you keep it open and why?

Answer #1

The way american soldiers are treated by other countries has nothing to do with it. We are supposed to be better than them. And for us to deny habeas corpus to any one, goes against everything the founders believed, and the ideals this country built on.

Answer #2

No, Gitmo should be closed immediately, and a full investigation should be done over the treatment the prisoners received. And if it is discovered that prisoners were tortured in violation of US and international law, those who ordered the torture should be prosecuted. Even if it is Bush or Cheney. It is the only way we can show the world that the last eight years was an anomaly, and that torture is not something the US should have ever done, nor will do again.

“As soon as Obama finds a place for the people imprisoned there he said he will close it. President Bush stated that he wants it closed but realizes that there are people imprisoned there that want to do harm to us Americans.”

The only thing Bush is realizing now is how bad it is going to look when these prisoners are brought to trial, and their treatment then becomes the issue instead of any alleged crimes.

“President Bush, and President-elect Obama have common sense, unlike jimahl. Jimahl would like to see all criminals let out of all prisons. “

Rickd, when did I ever say, imply, or even joke that I “would like to see all criminals let out of all prisons”? What I want is for the president to follow its US laws. The geneva convention forbids us to torture prisoners. Once we sign and ratify a treaty, it becomes the law of the land. The president doesn’t get to pick and choose which laws he will follow.

“Well jimahl , some people need to be detained. That is how it has always been. “

Just detained? No trial, no due process, no habeus corpus? Does that sound like the country the founders designed? It is not how it always has been. In fact the only time habeus corpus rights were ever suspended was during the civil war, and Lincoln was slapped down by the SCOTUS for doing it.
