Are credit cards helpful for college students?

Helpful yes, but I don’t think worth it in the long time.

I got my first credit card in college (non debit) to help pay for textbooks and unexpected things that came up.

Then I went into debt and couldn’t afford to pay in back until now. I dropped out of school and work full time and was finally able to pay off my debt about a month ago. Hopefully I’ll finish my degree next fall.

I don’t know if my experience was typical, but I definitely don’t plan on owning another credit card ever again.

It totally depends on how financially responsible you are. Credit cards are helpful, yes. Especially if you are in need of something and do not have the cash to pay for it right away. However, if you always have a hard time paying the bills off every month, then eventually, you will end up in debt which could drastically affect your credit score and ruin your chances of buying a car or a home in the future. But, if you know that you are perfectly capable of paying balances on time and in full and if you have the necessary discipline to own a credit card, then you can go ahead and get one.
